FORNEY ISD
Tony A. Jackson Middle School / Tim V. Rhodes Intermediate School
Huckabee and Forney ISD are partnering on a combined middle / intermediate school facility, which will be completed in phases to accommodate anticipated growth.
The combined schools use a similar program of spaces and share a dining area, kitchen and library. Independent wings stretch out to embrace a central community lawn area. A cantilevered tree-like roof canopy is a unifying design element and creates a shaded, covered environment below. The building is raised above street level to create a pedestrian boardwalk around the perimeter of the building. Covered decks create outdoor rooms for informal learning and dining experiences. Collaboration rooms and outdoor patios along the exterior of the building give the facade a playful gesture.
With a strong emphasis on flexibility, classrooms were created to allow collaboration between students and teachers. The core areas are designed to allow maximum natural light. The library has been placed at the top of the central learning platform, with the Makerspace and flexible labs flanking one side.
