West High School / Middle School

The opening of West High School / Middle School marks a major milestone along West ISD’s journey to rise up following an explosion that destroyed three of its four campuses in 2013. The district turned a tragedy into an opportunity to evolve educational delivery in exciting and engaging ways to better prepare students for the modern workforce.

The design was inspired by the school’s civic purpose and focus on 21st century learning. A large promenade leads up to the entrance which welcomes the community with “open arms.” Inside, the center of the campus includes a 2-story Learning Resource Center which connects to a STEM lab. The spaces lead into a large student union and dining hall, which offer views into the competition gymnasium. A 400-seat performance hall features flexibility for performances and community engagements; it can also be partitioned into small-group learning spaces. Academic wings, fine arts and two practice gyms surround the commons.

Honor the tradition, spirit and legacy of the West community, while seizing the opportunity to ‘rise up’ and create something better than before
