West High School / Middle School
The opening of West High School / Middle School marks a major milestone along West ISD’s journey to rise up following an explosion that destroyed three of its four campuses in 2013. The district turned a tragedy into an opportunity to evolve educational delivery in exciting and engaging ways to better prepare students for the modern workforce.
The design was inspired by the school’s civic purpose and focus on 21st century learning. A large promenade leads up to the entrance, which welcomes the community with “open arms.” Inside, a 2-story Learning Resource Center connects to a STEM Lab and features learning stairs and pre-making, making and post-making spaces. At the center of the campus is a large student union that includes a cafeteria and pre-event space and is connected to a 1,000-seat competition arena. The student union is used as a civic center for the community. A 588-seat performance hall can be sectioned off into a smaller collegiate-style lecture hall. Academic wings feature classrooms with movable walls, writable surfaces and flexible furniture.
