Smith and Rhea Intermediate Schools
The conversions of the Smith and Rhea campuses (from elementary schools to intermediate schools) in FISD support the district’s vision for learning by creating flexible, efficient and innovative environments for all students.
The project increased the capacity of Smith and Rhea by 400 students. The focal point of the design is the learning commons, which serves as ‘The Hub’ for each school. Flex labs act as makerspaces and open up to each other and to the learning commons. Movable, comfortable furniture supports a culture of collaboration.
A central learning stair in the commons will extend the space to the second floor while creating a seating/lecture area for additional teaching opportunities. The front of the commons will house a multi-functional teacher prep area that allows visual supervision over the commons. Several classrooms will open to an exterior balcony and patio to promote outdoor learning activities.
