Huckabee to Present at TASB Summer Leadership

June 4, 2012

Huckabee is proud to present four sessions at this year’s TASB Summer Leadership Institute in Fort Worth.

It's Never Too Early to Start Planning a Bond

Date and Time: Thursday, June 28, 9:30 am

Presenters: Jody Clements, Superintendent of Kilgore ISD; Tom Lueck, AIA, COO of Huckabee; Jennifer Brown, Vice President of Communications at Huckabee

Many times, a bond fails because the district didn’t take the appropriate amount of time to fully develop a plan and create buy-in among voters. Instead, they rush to hire an architect, put a program together and throw it out to “see what happens.” To ensure success, starting the process early and taking time to plan and gather consensus is critical. This session will discuss the strategic planning that needs to occur to see success.

Beating the Odds: Passing a Controversial Bond in Today’s Climate

Date and Time: Thursday, June 28, 11:00 am

Presenters: Terry Morawski, Assistant Superintendent of Mansfield ISD; Jennifer Brown, Vice President of Communications at Huckabee

Seeing a limited window of opportunity, Mansfield ISD, a rapidly growing district in North Texas, took advantage of a temporary slow down in growth and called a bond election to address their older, overlooked campuses. Through a strategically-planned voter campaign, the district was able to achieve an increase in voter turnout by 103 percent and a win with 55 percent of voters in favor. MISD had the only successful election in North Texas.

No Change Orders. Is that Possible?

Date and Time: Thursday, June 28, 3:00 pm

Presenters: Jeff Brogden, Assistant Superintendent of Mansfield ISD; Tom Lueck, AIA, COO of Huckabee

Two of the most annoying words during any construction project: “Change Order.” Those Change Orders that keep you up at night. Unnecessary Change Orders. Avoidable Change Orders. Make-You-Want-to-Ring-Your-Architect’s-Neck Change Orders. In today’s competitive bidding environment, contractors may be cutting their price on “bid day,” but they're making it up in Change Orders during construction. Attendees will learn how to reduce Change Orders in the field that add time and money to a project.

To Build or Not to Build

Date and Time: Friday, June 29, 11:00 am

Presenters: Dr. Jim Chadwell, Superintendent of Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD; Gary Rademacher, AIA, Vice President at Huckabee; Doug Bensen, RA, Director of Design at Huckabee

In these difficult financial times, what are the triggers that districts use to determine, not only what to build, but when to build? Do you know exactly how your facilities are being used? Are your principals frustrated because they believe their campuses are full and can't hold any more kids or programs? This session will explore ways to maximize the efficiency of a facility to ensure you always know when to build another building.

I was impressed with the workshops they had with our teachers to get the ideas necessary to design a facility that is exactly what we needed to provide the best education.

Board President, Grandview ISD
